Despite the Lakers’ shortcomings and persistent injuries, James managed to make a big impact on the court this season by averaging 30.3 points per game, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. Unfortunately, James was only able to play in 56 games out of the season’s 82 games due to various injuries, which ultimately led to the Lakers missing the playoffs after a lackluster 33-49 record. Despite the poor performance from the team, James continued to give it his all and even expressed his frustration at losing, saying, “I hate losing. I feel like poop right now.” However, James did manage to set another career milestone by surpassing Karl Malone to become the second-highest scorer in NBA history with 37,062 career points. The top spot still belongs to Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with 38,387 points. James is expected to return to the Lakers for the final year of his contract in the 2022-2023 season, earning an annual salary of approximately $44.5 million.
